Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, The Conformist stars Jean-Louis Trintignant as Marcello Clerici, a Fascist operative in 1930s Italy who is sent to Paris to assist in the assassination of his former professor, an anti-Fascist dissident. Marcellos desire for social acceptance and normality becomes increasingly entangled with political obedience, repression and betrayal. Based on Alberto Moravias book, the film examines fascism through both political power and the psychology of a man determined to conform.
